Plan the interview before you light the room.

Begin with the conversation

For a fictional interview with a local craftsperson, define the central question and the audience’s reason to care. Prepare open prompts and enough background research to ask follow-ups. This article does not present an interview that actually happened. Its purpose is to make the preparation visible.

Choose a room for sound and access

Listen before unpacking. Traffic, machinery and hard surfaces may matter more than the attractive background. Confirm consent, location permission, accessibility and safe cable routes. Ask about time limits and the participant’s comfort. Do not turn the entire room into a set if that prevents normal movement or creates hazards.

Keep the visual intention simple

Choose an eye line, background depth and framing that serve the conversation. Test the light on a stand-in, watching for reflections and changes in daylight. A restrained setup can leave more time for listening. The appropriate look depends on the subject and context; this is not a universal lighting recipe.

Protect the recording

Monitor audio, verify recording settings and check that media has space. Explain when recording starts. After a short test, inspect the actual file instead of relying on a monitor display alone. Have a backup plan appropriate to the production and handle personal material with care.

Edit without changing the meaning

An interview edit can shorten repetitions, but it should preserve context and the speaker’s intended meaning. Keep source notes and review potentially misleading juxtapositions. Obtain the permissions needed for publication. Original interviews on this site will identify the interviewer, date and reporting context; sample guides will never be passed off as reporting.
